A Note on the Text

January 17, 2007

The poems designated by a month are constructed entirely of passages from speeches, executive orders, and other public statements of George W. Bush.  The selection and juxtaposition of the passages is my own, but all passages are quoted verbatim, as they appear on the official White House web site, http://www.whitehouse.gov.  All passages in a given poem were spoken during the month that appears as the poem’s title.  Ellipses signal omissions within an otherwise continuous excerpt, but no attempt is made to signal where one quoted passage joins another.

The “interleaves” respond to (usually by imitating an argument from) the letters, speeches, and other discourses of Osama bin Laden.  Only the italicized passages are direct quotations from bin Laden.  My source for bin Laden’s discourses was: Bruce Lawrence, ed.  Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama bin Laden (New York: Verso, 2005).
